What’s this Project all about?

This custom currency project is inspired by the world of Avatar, using design to explore hierarchy, culture, and storytelling within a fictional tribe. Each denomination represents a character or leader, with visual elements that shift to reflect status, power, and role within the community.

The system is built on a consistent grid and typographic structure, while variations in scale, color, and composition distinguish each note. A fictional language, tribe naming system, and embedded symbolic references further reinforce the world-building and deepen the narrative context.

Subtle details such as the recurring number eight and coordinates tied to the tribe’s sacred tree add hidden layers of meaning, making the currency feel immersive and intentional. Textures and layered imagery enhance depth while maintaining clarity and legibility.

Overall, the project explores how design systems can communicate narrative, using structured visual language and small details to build a cohesive and believable identity system.

Process work, including character development in Adobe Illustrator and the underlying code system for the banknotes, is shown below.
